Step by step
- Signal, slow down and get as far right as you can. Turn on your hazard lights.
- Stay in the car with your seatbelt on. Getting out next to interstate traffic is the most dangerous part of a breakdown.
- If you are blocking a lane, or anyone is hurt, call 911.
- Otherwise, dial 511 and ask for a live operator. In metro Atlanta they can connect you with a HERO unit.
- Note the nearest exit number or mile marker and which direction you were heading. Every helper will ask.
What HERO does
GDOT’s Highway Emergency Response Operators patrol metro Atlanta freeways. Their main job is clearing lanes so traffic moves again, and they also help stranded drivers with flat tires, jump starts, fuel and moving cars to the shoulder. The service is free. HERO does not tow your car to a repair shop.
When to call a tow
Call a tow when the car cannot be fixed on the shoulder, or when you want it taken straight to your mechanic or home. Tell the dispatcher your exit, direction and the make and model of the car, and ask for the total price before the truck is sent.
