Car towed from a parking lot in Georgia? What you can be charged

If your car is towed from private property in Georgia without your consent, state rules cap the charges. Under the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Maximum Rate Tariff No. 5 (effective June 17, 2024), the removal fee for a car, SUV or pickup is capped at $228, the first 24 hours of storage are free, and storage after that is capped at $33 a day.

Maximum fees for cars, SUVs and pickups

These caps apply to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 lb or less, towed from private property at the property owner’s request.

  • Removal: up to $228
  • Storage: free for the first 24 hours, then up to $33 per day
  • Electric vehicles: up to $60 per day in storage ($100 if damaged and needing an isolation barrier)
  • If you arrive before your car leaves the lot and can drive it away: up to $130
  • Notification fees: $26 within 24 hours, $65 after 72 hours, $91 at most
  • After-hours release: up to $65

Getting your car back

  1. Bring a valid driver’s license.
  2. Bring a key that starts the car.
  3. Bring proof of ownership or your right to the car, such as the registration or rental agreement.
  4. Pay the charges. The lot must accept cash. If it takes cards, it cannot add a surcharge.

What these caps do not cover

The state caps apply to private-property tows only. For tows that police order from public roads, the Georgia Consumer Protection Division says no statewide law limits the price, though some cities and counties set their own rates. A tow you arrange yourself is priced by agreement, so always ask for the total before the truck hooks up.

Nelo and Sons does consensual towing: you call us, and we quote you before we dispatch.

Where to complain

For a private-property tow that broke these rules, contact the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s nonconsensual towing unit. For prices you think are grossly excessive, contact the Georgia Consumer Protection Division.
